I like pop music too, but for me 0304 was a "jagged little pill" for me to swallow at first simply because of the shock I went into when I first heard how different the sound was from every other Jewel album!!!
My initial reaction: !!!! I think the songs could've sounded so much better without the crazy, excessive production....to me it was just way overproduced. I think it could've been a more typical, more intimate Jewel album without the excess. The songs themselves were great, meaningful, and not so different from other songs and messages she'd been writing. Although I must admit that Intuition probably needed the extra "oomph" of production to help emit the feeling of the song. That's just a fun song, and it still had a message. That's what many people didn't understand. While it was heavily produced, the songs still had a meaning and purpose underneath, like all of Jewel's music, and unlike some of this urban dance-type music that's out now that I can't stand. I still don't think many people actually 'got it', if you know what I mean. I have the CD but I don't really listen to it much, other than Intuition & Stand...sorry, it's my least favorite album.

you know what I really would enjoy for Jewel to do is a stripped version of 0304, like Alanis's Jagged Little Pill Acoustic. I think 0304 Acoustic would be awesome.
and I do like pop music, I just prefer folk style and acoustic music better. I will admit I really hated 0304 the first time I heard it...

oh I'll add this b/c I think it's funny. i made my wife a cd a while ago like months and I put Yes U Can on it and she kept asking me what that Gwen Stefani song was... and I did actually put a no doubt song on the cd so I was like telling her and playing it for her and she was like no no thats not it and she was like the boots are thumpin ha ha and I was like that is Jewel not Gwen Stefani and she was like "really? wow"
Why didn't Jewel ever release Yes U Can as a single? I think for pop music, it's very catchy and would have really caught on...

Yes U Can was the only song I could play around my friends without them bellyaching that it was Jewel

How can people bellyache that Jewel is playing? I don't get it.... I have that problem if I overdo it in the car.... but she knows when I am trying to go to sleep during the day I need my 'Gary's Jewel Sleepy Mix' and she better not touch that dial.
I don't think I can go to sleep without it anymore.... "We are everyday angels"

Somewhere out there, there is a more stripped & acoustic-type performance video of Jewel doing Intuition & 2 Become 1......I can't remember the site right off hand. I'll go surf and see if I can find it again.

I have been obsessed with THIS WAY lately... I can't stop listening to it. I hate to say it but as much as I love SPIRIT, I am thinking that This Way may be becoming my fav album now. But what do I know really, if I listen to POY I will say that is my favorite album or GAIW, I just love them all.. but seriously I am obsessed w/ This Way lately... I guess I am really ready for a country album

Back to the question... POY of course. IMO it's an album the EVERYONE should listen to, at least 3 times in their lifetimes.

I thought we were getting "yes u can" as the summer single of 2004 it really looked like it was about to head that way. Jewel gave up on 0304 way to early she released Intuition in what month did that come out to radio that was like March/April and then she released Stand in like August September and i remember 2 become 1 coming out in decemeber.
I really thought that Yes U can would of been a single I was going crazy about it when it was in that hair color commercial. The thing i don't get about Jewel is "0304" is one of her favorite albums that she has done yet she never plays any of the songs of it at concerts.. When was the last time you seen "Haunted" on a set list. or U and me= love or sweet temptation on one of her setlists for her concerts |

I do think Yes U Can would have been a very powerful single. I have often wondered why she didn't release that... maybe she was scared she would have really been stereotyped as a pop star sell-out? Due to the poppiness dance sound of the song I mean..

My favorite would have to be This Way. It's the album that I listen to the most and I always can listen to it.
I can't stand "doin fine" on 0304. I think it's one of her worst songs ever. I loved "2 become 1" though. Acoustically, it's awesome! |
