Here's a nice interview of Jewel in relation to 'Arthur and the Invisibles'

Quote:
Arthur and the Invisibles: Jewel Interview
By Daniel Robert Epstein
"I'm really into country music and I couldn't do it on Atlantic."
Jewel is another one of those multitalented musicians that is breaking away from the yoke of the major record labels and going about it independently. It is hard to believe that an artist that has sold over 25 million records is now going DIY and hosting the new season of Nashville Star. Her latest triumph is the song "Quest for Love," which she co-wrote and sang for the Luc Besson film, Arthur and The Invisibles.
UGO: I know you've been on soundtracks before but have you ever created a song specifically for a film?
JEWEL: I have actually, for The Craft.
UGO: Ooh, I loved The Craft.
JEWEL: Also my first real industry job was writing the song "Emily" for the Sean Penn movie, The Crossing Guard. He had me write a pretty big song. It was fun because I recorded it in a radio station with one little mic and Sean used it just like that in the film. I hope I've gotten better at writing and it's more comfortable and more fun for me because I'm not thinking about my career so much. So I can focus on something like this.
UGO: A lot of musicians are inspired by movies for their songs. What is it like to be directly inspired by a movie to create a song for that same movie?
JEWEL: It's fun. There are two ways of writing. One is writing for myself on my records. I don't write with titles. I don't write with hooks. A lot of times it's about an ambiguous feeling which is like having a story told to you out of your head. You can't wait to turn to the next page to see what the next verse is about. With "the Invisibles," you get taken into a specific world that somebody else has carefully and lovingly planned out and you get to be swept up into the emotions of it. Then you try to take the story and condense it down into a three minute song. You try and make it sound organic which still takes a unique combination of skills to do.
UGO: Since it is a French film, did you bring in any French instruments?
JEWEL: No, not at all. I'm not a method musician [laughs].
UGO: You collaborated with Andrea Remanda on "Quest for Love." Is that someone you work with a lot?
JEWEL: No it was our first time working together. It was great. It worked out really organically. We both thought the song should go with what the movie was about to the point where it really is the little things that make the difference. So it was actually an awesome process.

UGO: When the eventual Arthur sequels happen, would you be interested in doing another song or a voice?
JEWEL: I'm always open.
UGO: Do you have a favorite Luc Besson movie
JEWEL: The Fifth Element. It was interesting to see his name on Arthur. I had no idea. Then you see how it is stylized so I can see why he'd want animation.
UGO: I read that you recently did the video for "Goodbye Alice In Wonderland" for only $5000. Why so cheap?
JEWEL: It was because it was a song that fans liked but record labels didn't. It's not a single. It's a six minute long, Bob Dylan-y lyrical song. But fans love it. Yahoo actually gave me the five grand and I just hired some friends and we edited it together and it was a blast. I was able to get the song out there as a single even though it never got radio play. But it got played on CMT. We're trying to make a whole country record so this is a way to get it out there.
UGO: So you're moving into doing country music now. You were born in Utah, but raised in Alaska. Do they have any indigenous country-type music there?
JEWEL: Yeah but my whole family were musicians. They were educated at home. They were homesteaders so they were given land before it was a state to settle it. They lived in the middle of nowhere until the '50s. My Dad was born in a horse and wagon and I was raised with an outhouse and no running water. So they wrote music to entertain themselves. They all wrote their own songs. I guess you would call it folk music. But it was also about the horses and pushing our cattle up to the head of the bay. It was very community oriented.
UGO: I speak to a lot of artists that are either being let go by their labels or are breaking from the labels and doing it themselves or going with someone very small. Why did you break away from Atlantic Records?
JEWEL: I'm really into country music and I couldn't do it on Atlantic. I don't feel like I've changed. I've always been a storyteller. There was just a great time when storytelling did well. Plus my contract was coming up anyway and I think it was a great time to be independent.
