Default Qualities of Leadership

I have to do a project about the qualities of leadership. I've made my outline, but I figured I'd reach out to the Jewel fans to see what they think.

I thought about charisma, confidence, ethics, being caring and having a plan to execute as such qualities.

What else is out there? Who are your role models?

Good communication skills are always a plus, it also helps to be persuasive.

I am a manager and I feel the best way to lead the team is by example. I like to be efficient and understanding. I listen and discuss with the team but I know when to take the lead when it's needed. I also feel that it's extremely important to give feedback to your team on their progress and help them whenever they are falling down on a particular area or areas.

I agree with Kyle that communication is key. Without good communication and more importantly, honesty within a team, then there is an excellent basis there to progress and motivate a team to do well.

One of the things I like to do also is to celebrate success. I like to make sure that if we have succeeded in something in particular or if a team member has done a particularly outstanding job, then I like to reward the team. When we falter, I like to discuss with the team why we fell down and try to take the lessons learned from this so that we can prevent doing them again. I am not the blaming type. I do like to know who is responsible for something but I am not one to shame a person. I just like to know so that I can help the person(s) through not repeating the same mistake.

I like to think that I am a good leader. I have a good professional relationship with my team and so far, it has gone well for everyone. I have always aimed to be fair and honest with the team and make sure everyone is in the loop. I found that comes back to me with a well motivated and productive team. This has really boosted morale within the team and I like to thnk that this is a combination that has worked well to date and I'll continue this method until it stops being effective. Hopefully that won't happen.

Good points. Of course, it's always easier said than done.

One time, I went to a human resources/performance evaluation seminar, and the speaker said to the group that if you are a manager (or higher, of course), you are not entitled to have a bad day.

I thought that was interesting. It means that people look to you for guidance and as an example, and if you let a "bad day" get to you, it will set the tone for the rest of the organization. I try to live by that slogan.

Why does Adolf Hitler come to mind...not the Evil Hitler...but the governing learder Hitler...! a person that had the great ability of holding court, making others listen, a fantastic trait.
as well as passion, humor, and empathy strength of character, general maturity, patience, wisdom, common sense, trustworthiness, reliability, creativity, sensitivity...the Hitler thing goes out of the window for most of these!

I don't think historians disagree about Hitler's ability to lead. But what he is remembered for is the brutal torture and killing of a race of people.

The interesting thing is that had he succeeded, he may have been regarded as a bold visionary in history books (well, he would have at least re-written the history books to his specs).

FDR was a pretty good leader.
