I never understood why the movie wasn't more successful than it was. It took in less than 1 million dollars total and It took 35 million to make. I really thought it was a good movie and it had some top name people in it and Ang Lee producted it so I never could figure out why it did so badly. Jewel was good in it.

No, it was a big flop, but I think in the end it paid itself off with the DVD release and TV screenings.

I actually just watched the movie. They've been playing it this month on Starz or Encore...I can't remember which, but it's been on quite a bit. I enjoyed it.

It probably would have done a lot better if it was made after Spiderman and Toby Mcguire becoming so famous and all...

Toby McGuire was also in Cider House Rules which opened one month after Ride with the Devil and it was very successful and made aprox 60 million at the box office. I think that Ride with the Devil just didn't catch on with people, I don't know if it was because it was a war movie or what, but I don't think that it would have mattered when it came out. I personally liked the movie very much, and remember Ang Lee had won an oscar not long before Ride with the Devil came out and there was a lot of hype about the movie but it just didn't connect. Also I remember an interview with Ang Lee about the movie and he felt that Jewel was the pulling power to make the movie a hit.
