Green Bay Recap
from the newspapers live blog during the show:
I always found Jewel to be a bit insufferable -- but I suppose that was more a product of hearing her songs on the radio every five minutes back when I was in high school. She just killed some high notes on "Foolish Games" and is now playing "You Were Meant For Me" -- arguably two of her biggest hits. It's just her and an acoustic guitar, and I am actually finding this quite enjoyable, which I suppose says something about not only her talent, but my softening with old age. Up until this point, I had really only remembered Jewel from a memorable exchange she had with MTV's Kurt Loder about the proper use of the English language in her poetry books. That smarmy Loder -- always putting the Alaskan education system on trial (though I suppose with recent events -- ahem, Sarah Palin -- it probably speaks volumes.) But back to Jewel. While I was working feverishly to file my story, Jewel belted out some songs off her new country album. She also told a story about opening for Bob Dylan, and is now playing her other monster hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul?" "It was really weird to have it played in the middle of Nirvana and Soundgarden, which made no sense." Before digging into it, she also talked about how it was the first song she wrote, and how surreal it was to hear "Soul" on the radio. She literally had to pull over on the road the first time it came on, she was so overcome by emotion. As one might guess, she also talked a bit about being homeless and genuinely thanked her fans to making her successful music career a reality. She also poked fun at her tight vocals on the song -- which to me, always sounded like she had peanut butter stuck on the roof of her mouth. "It turned out to be embarrassing, but I guess it was embarrassing all the way to the bank." Nice, sharp set by Jewel. She just wrapped up, and Mr. Ben Folds, who puts on an amazing live show, should be a crowd pleaser. |
