Not sure I understand your answer Sonne. Anyway, I have private health insurance thankfully but only for the last 3 years. Up until then, I had no insurance and fell back on the public system we have here. My health insurance didn't cover me when I had my daughter as I needed to have it a year before getting pregnant so I just fell back on the public system then. Great service and didn't cost me a penny!

I think I get it now...

You say that because of being pregnant the public system drove you back, but now you pay for one, is that right?

No it's a case that if you don't have health insurance here in Ireland, you will still get treatment for free but you will only be seen as a public patient and go onto a waiting list to see specialists or get operations. To get get immediate care and not have to wait, you need to pay privately here and that can be expensive. Having health insurance means that if I did have to go into hospital, I could get into a private hospital and the insurance would cover it.

For example. If I needed an operation and had no health insurance, I could go to a public hospital and get it done for free but I could be waiting a year for the operation unless it was an emergency. If I went to a private hospital, I could get the operation done in a couple of weeks but it would be expensive. If I have health insurance, the insurance company would pay most or all of the bill for the private hospital.

Sounds a bit confusing but it's common practice here.

If our public health system were functioning properly, no-one here would need health insurance but because the public health system here is so badly managed, waiting lists are huge and so people feel they have no choice but to get things done privately so health insurance is better to have in order to cover the expensive bills.

My employer paid for my health insurance so I was lucky.

Ahhhh... now I see

It´s sad the public system have so many troubles That they can (if they want) let you wait for months for an operation, is just insane, more than insane a "shame"!

But hopefully you are covered with one now

Public insurance vs private insurance... it's an ongoing debate. Those of us in the US have a wide range of private choices, primarily by our employers. Those who are lucky enough to be part of a generous company, or those who are high enough in the ranks receive better plans. There is a lot of disparity.

I for one think that for the US to have passed the recent law regarding insurance was overdue. There is much work ahead to work out the small details, but in the end, I hope that everyone will eventually have adequate, affordable coverage.

But the next big step is to see if there is a way to link all the hospitals together so that patient information can be shared timely and with ease. Now THAT is a big challenge.
