I can definitely see him being gay. At first I thought it was Jo trying to get attention, but what more attention would she even want? You can see some clues for sure and it's only slightly -- if you wanted him to be straight you could read with him being straight- it's really left open to the reader. But for her as the author he was gay. I like that she never really dwelled on things like this within the reading that weren't relevant to Harry Potter himself (since everything happens to him)
